What Is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an annual charitable contribution of 2.5% of your net liquid assets, provided they exceed the *nisab* threshold.
What Counts as Zakatable Assets?
- Cash (in hand, bank accounts, savings)
- Gold and silver (by weight and market value)
- Investments held for less than a year
- Business inventory
- Outstanding loans you expect to recover
Deductible Liabilities
- Short-term debts and bills due
- Outstanding business expenses
- Personal loans due within the year
The Calculation
- Add up all liquid assets.
- Subtract short-term liabilities.
- If the result exceeds the nisab, pay 2.5%.
Example
- Cash + gold + investments = $50,000
- Short-term liabilities = $10,000
- Zakatable amount = $40,000
- Zakat due = $1,000
Zakat purifies your wealth and supports those in need — a spiritual and social obligation.
